That's the Virgin Islands.
The clearest waters, the finest beaches, some say in the world.
I went there not so long ago, and my life changed forever.
But let me show you my story.
My name is Maria, and I'm half Korean and half Hawaiian.
An exotic mix of two proud and hot-blooded races.
That's me in the picture.
I was the bright one in the family and won all the prizes at school.
Eventually, it led to a study scholarship at American University
and a working trip to the Virgin Islands.
My subject was archaeology, and I was convinced
that many of the pirates and buccaneers who used to roam the Caribbean
had buried their treasures on the reefs and tiny islands that made up the Virgins.
I was having a quiet walk one day when I looked up to see a face I'd known back at school.
