Alexander was my best friend Billy's boyfriend.
We were never very close, but we'd see each other at parties and on outings when Billy would bring him along.
"Hey boys, come have some wine, he's joining me."
We'd make small talk, but never really get into anything particularly interesting or deep.
He was just sort of there in the background mostly.
The thing was, though, that Billy went away on an extended trip for work, and was gone for a couple of months.
Alexander was lonely, and would call me up every now and then, and eventually started coming by to hang out.
I was all for it, because frankly, with Billy gone, I was getting a little bored and lonely myself.
"I've got a flash." "Oh, come on, you've got it."
Eventually he started to crash into his bed, which I didn't mind.
It got to be routine, and comfortable. It was nice having him there.
Easier than being in the apartment alone.
It also gave us a chance to get closer, which I thought was good for all three of us.
I could tell, though, as we became more comfortable, and the living arrangement became more normal, that he was really missing Billy.
I can't blame him. It was a long time for anybody to be away from their boyfriend.
And our hangouts began to get more somber as the mood changed.
